2012 Shipping Rates Update
The latest shipping rates update sees shipping lines implementing huge increases.
Sea freight rates for full container load (FCL) shipments were almost halved in 6 months from January to June this year and the shipping lines are taking action!
In June the shipping rates update announced increases of between USD$750 and $1000 for 20ft containers and between $1500 and $2000 for 40ft containers effective from the 1st of July. Early signs, however, suggest they don’t seem to have been able to get that much.
It’s no secret that FCL sea freight rates have been very low for importing from China and elsewhere in Asia to the UK. Since mid-to-late 2012 sea freight rates have been sliding and it’s widely accepted that the shipping lines have been losing money. From the 1st of July, the rates were increased between $500 and $750 for a 20ft container and between $1000 and $1500 for 40ft containers.
Even with these increases, the rates are still lower than those recorded at the same point in July last year.
