We’re talking shipping pallets…pallets vs loose cartons to be precise. Read on for the pros and cons of each option, plus some questions you should ask your supplier before any items are put on pallets.
-
The Pros Of Shipping On Pallets
Shipping your goods on pallets is safer for fragile goods such as ceramics or glassware. It provides extra protection against movement in transit as well as protection from rough handling at the loading warehouses as your goods will be moved using a forklift.
It is down to your supplier to do this to ensure your goods are appropriately packed for transit. If your goods are fragile, your insurance may require your goods to be on pallets to class them as suitably packed.

Cons Of Pallets
Sending goods on pallets does take up more space, especially if it’s a large shipment as you will be charged for the space that can’t be used on the pallet. So if your goods aren’t fragile, it will work out cheaper for you to not have them palletised (your supplier may also charge for this service).
Loose cartons are commonly shipped by suppliers as they don’t have to worry about fumigating the pallet.
If your goods are going to Amazon, your supplier will need to ensure the cartons are labelled and pallets are built to Amazon’s specifications (100x120x164cm) however, we can also palletise the goods here in the UK to Amazon’s spec if needed.
A tail-lift cannot be used (due to health and safety) if the pallets are over 1000kg each.

Palletising On Arrival
If your goods are sent as loose cartons, we will palletise the cartons for delivery here in the UK, they will not be delivered as loose cartons unless shipped as a full container (and your supplier hasn’t used pallets).
When the delivery arrives to you, you can break down the pallets to offload the cartons by hand if required.
You’ll only be paying for the amount of space your cartons take up if they are shipped loose. However, there is the risk of other cartons being stacked on top of yours, therefore it is important to ensure your supplier suitably packs the products inside each carton.
-
Things You Should Check With Your Supplier
It may be worth asking your supplier how they have palletised your goods to see if they have done this in the most efficient way.
We have seen suppliers pack too many cartons onto pallets (making them far too heavy for a tail-lift) which causes issues with delivery here in the UK.
It is also worth noting that they should be using UK pallets as our prices are based on a delivery cost which assumes standard pallet spaces are used on the vehicle.
